About Monterey
The City of Monterey California has a long and varied history, and one in which a great natural family vacation can be had. Start off with the downtown area of Monterey, and the downtown area is the location for some of the best restaurants in all a central California!
The famous ‘Cannery Row’ is home to the Monterey Bay Aquarium as well as lots of shops and boutiques in which to have a great family vacation day! Monterey California is the destination location for visitors from all over the globe and as far as Australia and Great Britain! The famed author John Steinbeck moved from New York to Monterey in late 1944 and purchased his boyhood dream house and referred to it as the ‘Lara Soto Adobe’. Monterey California is full of fascinating facts and historical tools that can be weaved into a part of the great family vacation.
The City of Monterey California is the namesake for the entire county of Monterey and central California. In as much as these beautiful coastal communities sit on the banks of the Pacific Ocean, as well as many other waterways, the commercial fishing industry is strong and alive in Monterey California. The first commercialized fishing adventure, into the Monterey Bay area, started at Alone Beach as is what Cannery Row is now,
This was initiated by the first real immigrant Chinese fishermen who came over in 1853. These Chinese adventurers migrated further from the gold mines of the West Coast and from the streets of San Francisco to Monterey California. In order for better fishing grounds. The fishermen exported hundreds of pounds of fresh and dried fish to the people of San Francisco daily, and even shipped dried fish to China! The Chinese fisherman had so much success that intensity came in the form of racial prejudice. And this is what happened to the Chinese of moderate California back in the late 1800s. The fishing village was burned to the ground and was not allowed to be rebuilt. Although some the Chinese remain in the area and work in the canneries as cutters and remained until the late 1930s. This is testament to the Asian influence that can be seen all in Monterey California.
Any trip into the City of Monterey California has to involve a day trip to Monterey Bay Aquarium. Both the children and adults alike will be fascinated by the sheer beauty and variety of the tropical fish as well as local marine life that the aquarium houses and displays. There are many hotels and other forms of accommodations available in the Monterey area with camping being one of the most popular. Make a trip of a lifetime to Monterey California where the history lesson is perpetually ongoing!
